From Illumination to Intelligent Protection: Shendong Coal’s Smart Miner’s Lamps Guard Miners’ Safety

On January 12, at the Joint Construction Building of Halagou Coal Mine of Shendong Coal, Deng Tenglang, a young miner about to go down the well, quickly put on his work uniform. He skillfully took a brand-new miner’s lamp out of the cabinet and carefully fastened it to his safety helmet.

“With this new miner’s lamp, I feel much more assured going down the well.” Deng Tenglang said with a smile.

Miner’s lamps are the “eyes” of miners, and essential equipment for underground lighting, guarding miners’ lives and safety. Reporters learned from Halagou Coal Mine that the miner’s lamps of this mine had been upgraded to smart miner’s lamps. These lamps integrated multiple functions including underground illumination, personnel positioning, voice communication, remote monitoring, video transmission and information storage. They built an all-weather, full-scenario safety production protection network connecting the coal mine’s ground and underground areas.

According to the mine’s staff, this smart miner’s lamp could not only provide stable lighting but also came with a smart terminal. It realized voice communication and alarm for help in different scenarios. Furthermore, its built-in electronic chip could locate the real-time position and movement track of underground workers. The high-definition camera attached to the lamp could transmit the real-time working images of miners to the ground dispatching and command center immediately. It acted like a mobile “sky eye” underground.

“In the past, we had to shout or run to report problems. Now with smart miner’s lamps, hidden danger inspection becomes ‘visible’ and risk control becomes ‘audible’.” Jia Dongchen, Deputy Director of the mine’s Dispatching Command Center, introduced to reporters. When miners engaged in unsafe behaviors in high-risk underground operation areas, ground managers could conduct remote intervention through voice intercom immediately. They corrected irregular operations in a timely manner and nipped potential accidents in the bud.

Meanwhile, the video data uploaded in real time by the smart miner’s lamps were completely stored in designated servers. In case of emergencies or accidents, managers could retrieve video recordings. They restored the scene accurately and identified the causes quickly.

The upgrade of a small miner’s lamp from “illumination” to “intelligent protection” not only brought light to miners, but also built a multi-layered safety protection network.
